System Restore

System restore is a valued feature in Microsoft's Windows XP. System restore allows users to roll back their computer to how is was at an earlier time, restoring program files, registry keys and system files. This can be essential if the user has run into problems and is getting errors in XP. Basically, you can choose to back up XP by creating a system restore point. You can then at a later date, restore XP back to that state. You can create more than one restore point, and XP will create restore points from time to time and before installing some software or updates.

This tutorial aims to cover 3 aspects of system restore and enable the user to:

1: Create a system restore point

2: Restore XP to an earlier state

3: Delete all but the last created restore point.

1: How to create a system restore point

Step 1) To create a system restore point, from the desktop navigate to:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore (click here to see image)

(alternatively navigate to Start > Run and type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe)

Step 2) Select "Create a Restore Point", then click next. (click here to see image)

Step 3) Type in a description you will remember(recognise) then click "Create" (click here to see image)

Step 4) You have successfully created a System Restore Point (Click here for image)

2: How to Restore XP to an earlier state.

Step 1) To restore XP to an earlier state navigate to:-

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore (click here to see image)

(alternatively navigate to Start > Run and type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe)

Step 2) Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click next. (click here to see image)

Step 3) Select the date you wish to restore XP to, (a day before you ran into problems) and click next. (click here to see image)

Step 4) Double check that you have selected the correct date that to wanted to restore to and click next (Click here to see image)

Step 5) Your PC will now reboot and and an image will be displayed saying restore was successful (click here to see Image)

3: How to delete all but the last saved Restore Point.

System Restore points can take up valuable space on your hard drive. If you want to reclaim some of that space and delete all but the last saved System Restore Point do the following:-

Step 1) From desktop navigate to Start>accessories>tools>Disc Cleanup (Click here to see image)

Step 2) Select the drive you want to clean up (Usually C:/) (Click here to see image)

Step 3) A box will pop up, select the "More Options" tab at the top (Click here to see image)

Step 4) On the More Options tab, where it says System Restore click on Clean up... (Click here to see image)

Step 5) Click "Yes" to clear all but the latest System Restore points.

Unless you press cancel, mission accomplished :o)
