How to install nVidia Drivers

This tutorial aims to assist users to install nVidia drivers for their nVidia graphics card correctly. If you are currently experiencing graphics card problems i recommend you follow the steps listed below to get the maximum performance and stability from your nVidia Graphics card. (Note: This tutorial is written for Microsoft Windows XP users using nVidia Graphics cards)

Additional Optional Downloads:

Tune Up Utilities 2009 (trial version)

Detonator R.I. P. (Free Download)

1: Download the latest nVidia drivers

To ensure your nVidia graphics card performs efficiently you should download the latest nVidia Force ware drivers from nVidia.

Whilst on nVidia's web site, select the appropriate options from the three boxes and download the driver, selecting save....DO NOT INSTALL THE DRIVER YET.

2: Boot into Safe Mode and uninstall your current drivers

Once you have downloaded the NvIdia drivers and save to file, you then need to uninstall your graphics card. To do this you need to boot your pc into Safe Mode (normally pressing F8 at boot up) . Once in Safe Mode navigate to

Start > Control Panel> Add Remove Programs

Select the nVidia drivers from the list then click remove. (note: if you are unsure how to boot into Safe Mode read the article on Booting in Safe Mode)

Stay in safe mode otherwise Microsoft Windows XP will automatically attempt to install default graphics card drivers on your system, If for any reason you get the message saying, XP has detected new hardware, do not allow XP to install new drivers as we will be installing the "proper ones" shortly.

3: Uninstall old drivers

You may well have old or unused graphics card drivers on your PC that you did not realise were there. These old and redundant drivers can cause conflicts resulting in you graphics card not performing properly and even slowing your system down. To check to see if you have any old drivers still installed navigate to the following:

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager

Once in Device manager, click on View, then click on show hidden devices.

By enabling "show hidden devices" you will now be able to see if you have any old graphics card drivers still installed. Any old graphics card drivers will now show under either Display Adapters or System Devices and they will be a light gray colour. If you do have any listed simply right click on the driver in the list and select:

Properties > Driver > Driver Details

Make a quick note of any drivers listed and there location so you can check they removed properly later. Once you have noted the names and locations, select uninstall. Once the drivers have been uninstalled, navigate to the locations you noted down and check they are no longer there, if any are still showing just delete them.

Reboot your PC remembering to go into Safe Mode again, if Microsoft Windows XP says new hardware found do not let it install drivers.

(Note: I recommend you run Detonator RIP and then the Registry Cleaner that comes with Tune up Utilities 2006 now if you have them, if not then just carry on with the next step)

5: Install your new nVidia Driver

All you have to do now is navigate to the nVidia Driver that you downloaded and double click on it. Your new nVidia Drivers will now install. Most nVidia graphics cards have extra options, (e.g. over clocking and fan control) that are locked by default. To unlock these options download and install Coolbits available in the download section.
