4. Install Drivers

The drivers tell your PC how to allow hardware to work, despite common opinion, it IS essential you install these in the correct and logical order! Any deviation from this order can affect performance, stability and functionality. Install the drivers you prepared earlier in this order,(note: do not be tempted to install anything other than these drivers yet.)

Chipset
Graphics Card
Sound card

Once you have installed these drivers, you then need to format and name the other partitions you created earlier. Continue to the next section "Format and Name Partitions" to see how.

5. Format and Name Partitions

To format the remaining drives go to: Start > My Computer, one by one, right click on the remaining drives and select format.
Under file system select "NTFS". Under volume label name the drives according to what you decided, e.g. programs, my documents, back up, scratchpad etc. Once named click start, this will name and format the drives.

(Note: Do not select "Quick Format" or "Enable Compression")

6. Change default locations

As windows has been installed into a 10GB partition, C:/Windows, it is vital that we tell Windows XP where to place any other items. Firstly we need to tell XP that any programs you install need to go into the "Programs" partition.

Change Programs Location: To do this you should have already downloaded "RekaProgDir" and within that just click on Dprogloc, when prompted "are you sure to write to registry" select yes. This tells Windows XP to install programs to this partition by default. (note:If D was not the Partition location you wanted for programs to be installed then just select the correct prefix letter for the desired drive. nb. you can edit the reg file by opening in notepad and editing the letter of the drive remembering to 'save as' and rename appropriately )

Change My Documents Location: Next up is moving the location of My Documents to the third Partition. Simply go to Start, right click on My Documents and select Properties. You should now see a My Documents Properties box, click on move, select the third partition and select ok. Then click apply and ok. Now anything you save to my documents will be saved to the third partition, probably E:/.

Change Temp Files Location: By default, Microsoft Windows XP saves all temporary internet files to the C:/ Drive. As we only want XP in that partition, we need to move it to another partition. If you set up a "Scratchpad" partition then we will tell it to save them there, otherwise send to the My Documents partition. To change the location simply create a folder called Temp Internet Files in the chosen partition (Scratch pad or My Documents), the go to:

Start > Control Panel > Internet Options

Under the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, select settings followed by Move Folder. Navigate to the folder you created, select ok, then apply and save. From now on all temporary internet files will be stored there.

(Note: When you get to installing programs later, if those programs require work space for temp files as programs like Nero, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, go to properties and redirect any temp files to here for each installed application)
